The 2012/13 season kicked off today with the FA Community Shield, traditionally the first of the football trophies to be contested for.
The winners of the Premier League Manchester City took on FA Cup winners Chelsea in what turned out to be a thrilling curtain-raiser for the coming season, with City triumphing 3-2.
There were plenty of football goals for the fans to sink their teeth into and there was also a red card for Chelsea’s Ivanovic. It wasn’t to be Chelsea’s afternoon and those fans in the dark blue football kits will want to forget about this particular match.
On the plus side Torres managed to net himself a goal which could signal a return to a form that has been lacking, just when it seemed no amount of coaching or time spent on various pieces of football training equipment would bring it back.
It could be that his involvement in Spain’s historic double in winning a European Champions medal to add to his collection of football medals.
Manchester City did nothing if not signal their intent and their strength in a muscle flexing display to rivals Manchester United.
And who else could be more appropriate to get City’s defense of their campaign than the three goalscorers – Tevez, Yaya Toure and Nasri.
They were dynamic last year and seem to want to continue as they left off, sticking footballs in the back of football nets on a weekly basis.
It was also a sneak preview into some of the hot signings of the summer, specifically Eden Hazard who all of the big Premier League clubs were interested in signing. Unfortunately he did not make as large an impression as he would have liked, making a couple of his penetrating dribbles but mainly featuring for a failed back-heel, which drew laughter from the crowd.
Hopefully it’s the start of a rollercoaster season.
