Swansea’s hero Brendan Rodgers has been appointed as the next Liverpool manager.
Whether this will prove to be a positive career move for him remains to be seen. Every Liverpool manager since Rafa Benítez has had trouble meeting the high standards and lofty expectations of the red side of the Mersey.
Roy Hodgson had a very bad turn at Liverpool, recording only 7 wins during his 20 games at Anfield. 6 of these wins were at home, whilst 7 of the losses were away. The style of play Hodgson used didn’t suit the supporters or really the players at the club and he came in for heavy criticism. This didn’t affect him too badly career-wise because he’s now England manager. So the Liverpool escapade has been brushed aside.
King Kenny came to Anfield as Liverpool’s saviour – a club legend who caused sales of football accessories and football equipment with his name and face on to skyrocket. He fared better than Hodgson, recording 9 wins out of 15 games. Again the majority of the wins were at home and all losses away, leaving the King undefeated on his home turf. This still wasn’t enough to save his job though.
Liverpool want football trophies, their players want football medals and the fans want their footballing reputation back. Can Brendon Rogers deliver this to them?
When he came to Swansea in 2010 it was only his second senior managerial position. He had previously been a Chelsea youth team manager then reserve team manager. His first senior position came with Watford, where he only won two out of the first 10 league games. He rallied the players though and took them from the relegation zone to finish 13th.
He then joined Swansea and guided them to the Premiership, making them the first Welsh club to ever be in the top flight of English football. Which now must be called British football.
He’s got the credentials, he’s tasted success before. With faith, time and the backing of the fans, Liverpool FC could once again be a huge force in the Premier League.
