The Gunners have beaten Olympiakos 3-1 at the Emirates in their second Champions League match of their campaign.
Although they have taken a while to get going in the Premier League, the thirst for international football trophies has seen them win their first two games after beating Montpellier a fortnight ago.
Olympiakos were subjected to their 11th defeat on English territory when Gervinho pulled Arsenal in front, and even though the Greeks managed to pull a football goal back Arsenal’s second half performance meant there could only be one conclusion.
Lukas Podolski put Arsenal back in front on 56 minutes and then Aaron Ramsey finished the blitz with a goal on the 90th minute. Arsenal now top their group after Schalke were held to a 2-2 draw by Montpellier.
The Gunners have six points and are certain to progress to the next round of the competition. Arsenal have never won the Champions League, and their quest for football medals and glory would be complete if they were to win this year.
The same cannot be said for Manchester City though. After Manchester United’s victory against CFR Cluj on Tuesday night the pressure was on Manchester’s blue football kits. Pressure which they were not able to resist.
Their game against Berussia Dortmund was a must-win after their loss against Real Madrid, and they really did need to get more from the game than a 1-1 draw.
Dortmund showed no sign of missing Kagawa, who was sold to Manchester United in the summer transfer season, as they nearly knocked City out of the Champions League.
Marcos Reus scored for Dortmund on the 62nd minutes and it looked like it would be back to the drawing board for Mancini in Europe – but once again Mario Balotelli stepped up and slotted a penalty on the 90th minute to share the points.
City now need to win convincingly against Ajax, and Dortmund need to get stuffed by Real Madrid, if they’re to go through to the next round.
