Unless you’ve had your head firmly implanted in sand over the last few months you’ll doubtless be all too aware of the growing demand for goal-line technology. Officials and UEFA believe that it will slowdown a match and will bring a discrepancy to the games, as the technology cannot be used at all the levels, but support for the use of technology at major tournaments is gaining momentum.
In another incident of a goal that never happened, the referee disallowed a ball that ended up in the back of the net in a game involving Bashley FC and Gosport Borough.
It was Bashley FC who ended up on the wrong side of the decision as a close range effort from James Stokoe found its way into the net and a frustrated Gosport keeper kicked the ball through the side netting. Having missed the goal, referee Will Bull simply awarded a corner! And while frustrated Bashley demand a replay of the match, Gosport players and owners sympathize with their plight, but say that they would not be open to a rematch.
Considering how the score line was 2-2 when the incident happened and how Gosport went on to win 3-2 in extra time, this one mistake cost Bashley more than £10,000. And probably cost referee Will Bull a big chunk of his officiating career… But then, that is how the ball rolls at times!
