The final of the Olympics for London 2012 has been decided, with Brazil set to face Mexico to win the Gold football medals.

Brazil

Brazil’s route to the final has seen them beat Egypt 3-2, Belarus 3-1 and New Zealand 3-0.

They also beat dark horses Honduras 3-2 in their quarter final and South Korea 3-0 in the semi-final.

Not only have the athletes in the famous yellow football kit found the football nets 15 times in a five games, it means they have scored 3 goals per game which is an astonishing record for an Olympic team and surely puts them into the favourites position for the Gold.

Although in the professional game the Brazilian football team is legendary, winning countless football trophies and accolades including producing players that have adorned football accessories for years; the Olympic team is not so successful.

This final will be their first since the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and they will be pleased to be guaranteed a medal.

The Mexicans do not have anywhere near the pedigree of Brazil, they also did not have as successful run to the final that Brazil have had.

They had to rely on winning their final game 1-0 against Switzerland after drawing 0-0 in their first game against South Korea. They won their middle group game 2-0 against Gabon, which means that in all their group games they scored as many football goals as Brazil did in one game.

They have made up for their lack of goals by scoring 7 in their knock-out stages – beating Senegal 4-2 and then Japan 3-1.

Both teams will be hoping to get the coveted Gold medal, specifically seeing as both team’s medal counts are relatively low, with Brazil being 23rd in the table with 2 Golds and Mexico in 42nd position and still searching for their first Gold medal.

It would be a very big upset if Mexico did manage to beat the mighty Brazilians at Wembley on Saturday 11th August, but in the Olympic Games upsets are commonplace.
