We have a new range of Mitre water bottles available to help keep your players hydrated during training. These fun warm up games are the perfect way to start any training session – devised by the current Watford U16’s coach.
Swedish Hand Ball
Structure:
-Set up the area as above suiting the needs of your players .
Game 1: 1st to 20 consecutive passes
-Team mates pass the ball through hands.
-A player receiving the ball must control the ball legally and then catch it.
-Defending team only have to catch the ball to regain possession.
Game 2: 1st to make 10 one touch passes
-Team in possession continue to pass through hands and control the ball legally before catching it.
-The receiving player can either:
1.Secure the ball (control and catch)
2.Pass the ball to a team mate using one touch.
Game 3: 1st team to score 10 goals
-The player receiving the ball can either:
1.Secure the ball (control and catch)
2.Pass the ball to a team mate using one touch.
3.Score in the goal one touch if they received a one touch pass.
Throw Head Catch
Structure:
-Set up the area as above suiting the needs of the players.
Rules:
-Blues score in one goal and whites the other.
-The team in possession throw the ball to team mates.
-However a player receiving a throw must head it to a team mate.
-This process continues…throw, head and catch.
-The opposition can regain the ball with a catch at any time and then they follow the throw, head and catch process.
-If the ball drops then it is possession to the team who did not have the last touch..
Progressions:
-If the team in possession make five one touch passes the counts as five goals.
-The defending team must regain possession in the same sequences either with a throw or head.

So many warm-up routines are dull and unimaginative but these ideas are great. I particularly like the one-touch emphasis which will help players get in the mind set of passing, movement and positioning without the initial distraction of control and touch.
