The Team GB football kit has been slow to kick off in the Games whilst being worn by the Men, but in the Women’s football it has been a different story.

Team GB - Game 1

Although not as popular as the men’s, the Team GB women have played phenomenally and have already sealed their route to the quarter finals of the competition with one game in hand.

They beat New Zealand 1-0 in their opening game and then cruised past Cameroon 3-0, giving them plenty of practice putting footballs in the back of opposition football nets.

Those two results means that even if the women lose against Brazil in their final game they will still be able to take their campaign for the Olympic football medals a step further.

The situation in the Men’s football team is not as bright.

Their first game against Senegal ended in a 1-1 draw – and they looked far from convincing in it. There were calls for a penalty which should have been cut and dry after Senegal defender Sadio Manu cut down senior team member Craig Bellamy on the edge of the box.

All the same with the footballing pedigree wearing the Team GB kit you would expect them to pull up their football socks.

They managed this with a 3-1 victory over the United Arab Emirates yesterday evening, with Ryan Giggs scoring a well placed header. It wasn’t all about the big names though with Swansea’s Scott Sinclair netting GB’s second goal, followed by a nice chip by Daniel Sturridge to confirm the win.

That win means that Team GB’s Men need to draw against Uruguay if they want to stay in contention for the football medals. No easy feat as Uruguay were pre-tournament favourites.

This didn’t stop 10 man Senegal beating them 2-0 on Sunday though, so expect Britain to hammer the football training equipment and follow the Women into the quarters.
