In a footballing world whereby the traditional 4-4-2 formation is a somewhat of a distant memory, and where most of teams nowadays boast a more possession based, 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation. The pressure on a team’s goal scoring is placed even more upon a clubs ‘Target man’ or ‘Number 9’, if it wasn’t already.

It goes without saying that it takes a player of the highest quality to become the top goal scorer in the world’s elite domestic competition, the Premier League; so here are 5 contenders’ that could produce such goal scoring prowess to win a striker’s most prized individual honour, the Golden Boot.

Sergio Aguero

1v1

For many the best player in the Premier League today. Sergio Aguero continues to break Premier goal scoring records left, right and centre, including a new record that has recently come to light of the City striker scoring as many goals as Didier Drogba scored in his whole Chelsea career, but playing a staggering 102 games less! With the Argentinian forward still only 28, being the obvious first choice at title contenders City, and seemingly over his injury crisis, no one can deny that Aguero will there or their bout’s in the race for the Premier League golden boot come next May.

Harry Kane

1v1

Like many of the England’s players who returned early from the Euro’s in France, the sooner Harry Kane gets over the events of the summer, the better. With people rightly questioning his performances for the three lions, what cannot be questioned is the Tottenham forward’s goal scoring record for his club over the last two seasons. Having won the golden boot last season, and with the arrival of the highly rated Victor Jansenn to Spurs from Ajax creating an increased competition for places, one can only see Harry Kane continuing his ruthless streak in front of goal this season.

Zlatan Ibrahimović

1v1

3 goals in 3 games already. What more can be said about Zlatan? The Swede has admitted that he plays best when he’s treated like a superstar, and with that being the case, he should be playing his best football yet given the way the Man United fans have welcomed him to Old Trafford. Unrivalled in his experience, boasting undeniable talent and possessing the ability to score from almost anywhere on the football pitch, all under the management of Jose Mourinho! Don’t be surprised to see Zlatan add the golden boot to his trophy cabinet that must surely be running out of room by now.

Jamie Vardy

1v1

Jamie’s Vardy’s rise to international recognition will be remembered as one the Premier League’s many stories that will retold for generations. With Claudio Ranieri keeping the vast majority of the historic title winning squad together for the 16/17 season, you can see only see Vardy continuing to score more and more goals this season. New long-term contract in the bag after rejecting Arsenal, his profound work-ethic and pace, mixed with his composure in front of goal, there is no reason as to why Jamie Vardy’s goal scoring party cannot carry on this season.

Diego Costa

1v1

Similar in many ways to Zlatan. Whether you love him or hate him, what cannot be denied is that the Chelsea forward, on his day, is one of the most unplayable forwards in Europe! And if he, along with many other of Chelsea’s main players recapture the form they know they are very well capable of producing, there is no doubt Diego Costa will be among the Premier League’s leading goal scorers again this season. And if Conte’s new philosophy can guide Chelsea to a serious title challenge this season, it may be the Spanish striker who takes home the golden boot and the end of the season.
