There’s something wrong at Arsenal.
They are the only team to have not scored any football goals in their first two matches of the new Premier League season. Sunderland are the only other team yet to score, but their game against Reading at the weekend was postponed due to torrential rain so they may be able to redeem themselves.
Arsenal have lacked what Arsene Wenger called a ‘cutting edge’ up front. They have made plenty of chances with their new signings Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Spanish international Santi Cazorla but have failed to hit the back of any football nets.
Podolski and Giroud have lacked any penetration and they failed to threaten Stoke’s ‘keeper in their 0-0 draw at the weekend. Cazorla has been impressive but without the finishing touch that all pales into insignificance.
Wenger has said that he intends to stay active in the transfer market during the closed window and he will hope to snare somebody in January. It’s hard to overlook the fact that he may be regretting letting go of Robin Van Persie, especially now that their ‘For’ column in the table is showing 0.
Wenger was happy with his defenders though and the midfield is strong enough to be a threat, it’s just the finishing touch that Arsenal are lacking. The new star strikers have big boots to fill and they need to pull up their football socks if they want to avoid a similar nightmare start that the Gunners had last year.
On a more positive note, Arsenal are yet to concede any goals either, proving their defensive capabilities are strong, which is something that has not been a strong point in the past. Wenger won’t be happy with the slow start, but it could be a lot worse for the Gunners, who are currently sitting 12th in the table.
