Manchester United made it much harder work than it should have been to get their 2-1 victory over CFR Cluj in Romania in last night’s Champions League clash.
Manchester United haven’t won any international football trophies for a while and after last year’s disappointment at failing to get out of the group stages, Ferguson was keen to prove that the Red Devils have still got it.
This task was made difficult by shocking defending which made the United back four look like a Sunday league team, it allowed Cluj’s striker Kapetanos to slot a shot into the back of the net in the 14th minute. It was left to Van Persie to score twice to save the game, and even the defence tightened up once they were ahead again. Van Persie has now scored six goals in six games for United, proving his worth as United’s newest star.
Going behind early is a bugbear for United of late, in their past few games – domestic and international – they have conceded goals in the first half an hour and gone behind. Their start to the season has been slow and if they’re to really stand a chance of winning titles they need to get their defensive act together.
Their fellow Premier League team played a blinder in Denmark, with Chelsea beating FC Nordsjaelland 4-0. Mata scored the first goal in the first half, then after David Luiz scored on the 79th minutes the floodgates opened for Mata to claim a second and Ramires to net one right in the last minute.
So with current Champs on form and older Champs looking past it – will Chelsea’s reign continue?
